Dental Implants: Keeping Them Clean & Secure

A durable and strong solution; dental implants have one of the highest success rates for tooth replacement solutions – only around 5-10% of cases actually fail.

There are certain factors which could contribute to dental implant failure e.g. if the bone fails to fuse adequately to the titanium implant, or if the patient chooses to continue smoking post-treatment. Other reasons include underlying conditions like peri-implantitis, bad oral habits and hygiene and infection.

Premium implants function just like existing teeth and therefore depend on quality aftercare. And, if positioned by a specialist, or an implantologist, the chances of your dental implant lasting more than twenty years increases.

After your treatment, you will be given thorough advice on how you can best care for your implant and ensure its success and effectiveness.

If the bone does not attach properly, it is not the end of the world and we can always try again. We will remove the implant, the bone will be cleared up and the procedure can be reattempted a few months later.

This is rare and can occur in less than 5% of all implant placement cases.

Ensuring success

There are, however, some measures you can implement to help increase the likelihood that your implant will be successful and stable.

  • Keep up a strong cleaning routine: Optimum oral care is essential for successful implants. You should dedicate the same energy to cleaning the new artificial implant or implants like your natural teeth. It is possible to purchase special brushes to reach between the gaps that normal brushes cannot access.
  • Attend regular check-ups with your dentist: If you are meeting with your dentist regularly then they are more likely to spot any issues or potential risks with your implants. Spotting problems before they escalate is vital to maintaining your oral condition and preventing complications.
  • Consider trying to overcome bad habits: Seemingly harmless actions such as chewing the end of a pen or hard sweets can break and wreck your crowns and your natural teeth.

What else should I avoid post-treatment?

the best way to care for your dental implantsIf you have chosen to carry out the procedure under local anaesthetic, then you will likely feel the effects several hours after you leave the practice.

However, you should not eat until the local anaesthetic has fully worn off.

Additionally, you should avoid extremely hot food and drinks for the first day following the procedure, and you should try and chew on the opposite side of your mouth so as to not upset or irritate the site of the implant.

Where possible, try not to irritate the area with your tongue or fingers either.

You may experience some swelling and bruising about 2-3 days after the treatment. This is quite common, but feel free to get in contact if this is severe or you continue to experience discomfort.

Will I experience pain post-treatment?

Although you will experience some discomfort as your mouth heals, you should not feel any immense pain following the procedure. Discomfort can be managed using over the counter medication, but if any extreme pain persists, please get in contact with your dentist ASAP.
